Social enterprise development can achieve outcomes that the State and the private sector are ill-equipped or unwilling to achieve. Social enterprise can support economic empowerment and self- determination in marginalised and excluded communities.

Forfás recently (2013) published a report on Social Enterprise in Ireland which reviewed the potential of the sector and identified the potential for advancing social entrepreneurship through the collaborative engagement of different sectoral stakeholders.

‘in order for the sector to grow, social enterprises need to develop their business, leadership and management skills, as well as harnessing community, stakeholder and volunteer involvement' (Forfás 2013:5).

As a third level education provider with a long-standing involvement in entrepreneurial education the IT, Tralee is committed to facilitating the emergence and consolidation of local, regional and national cross-sectoral social entrepreneurship activity. To that end this Symposium has the following three objectives:

  1. To facilitate, recognise and showcase the emergence, development and value of social entrepreneurship as a force for local, regional and national renewal;
  2. To develop a network of mutual organizations / stakeholders and secure their involvement in the establishment of a Centre for Social Entrepreneurship;
  3. To launch the Irish Association of Social Care Educators (IASCE) Social Entrepreneurship Awards.

Please note that there is no charge for this event. Lunch will be provided at 1.15pm.
